    Summary

Key to success for a large-scale genome project:

  • Excellent collaboration (team play) between all members involved in the project and centralized coordination.

  • Utilizing the talents of people of a diverse background (system administration, database curator, applications specialist, biologists, undergraduate programmers).

  • Understanding the quality and amount of data needed to process.

  • Search literature and the Web (especially newsgroups) for existing software and possible solutions.

  • Decision making: what needs to be done from scratch and what is possible to re-use.

  • Balancing the real amount of time and effort needed to solve a particular problem.

  • Most importantly - some extent of luck.
